Westmoreland Advanced Materials manufactures Silicon Carbide containing castables using mullite as the alumina source. High quality, fully homogenized and fired mullite grains are purchased in the exact sizes needed to make an installation optimized castable. High quality Silicon Carbide is blended into the appropriate particle size fractions to match the Software Optimized Particle Size Distribution in order to obtain the best installation characteristics at the minimum water additions. The use of mullite grains instead of bauxite insures a mineralogical consistency not obtainable in less beneficiated raw materials. Mullite has the useful feature of slight expansion at higher temperatures, insuring that most linings will remain in a compressive state even as moisture is driven off during heat-up.
