Silicon Carbide has several unique properties making it valuable as a refractory raw material. In small quantities it improves resistance to slag and metal penetration, because it is non-wetting to most metals. Added in higher quantities it raises thermal conductivity to improve heat transfer to boiler tubes, while still affording the protection from corrosion that improves tube life. Like all of our Premium Grade products, Westmoreland Advanced Materials™ has optimized the particle packing to reduce the water addition needed for excellent field installation characteristics. We have also designed these products such that the SiC protects the bond matrix from penetration and reaction. Available from 10% to 80% Silicon Carbide contents.

A new technology allows us to blend a multicomponent additive to any one of our products to render them non-wetting to aluminum, and to increase resistance to penetration by aluminum alloys. The additive package is a blend of ingredients that will provide protection from commonly defined mechanisms of corundum formation; specifically capillary entrainment into the lining and subsequent exposure to oxygen in the higher temperature area above the metal line, and mineralogical reduction of oxide components in the lining. Below the metal line, penetration inhibitors reduce the capillary action that draws molten metal into the refractory. This reduces the surface area of the WAM® AL products that are in contact with the molten aluminum, and thereby reduces the likelihood of aluminum being drawn into contact with higher temperature above the metal line. In the belly band area, the penetration inhibitors are not destroyed by the higher temperatures, and retain the characteristics that limit the formation of corundum.

Premium Grade WAM® low cement and ultra-low cement products are manufactured using premium grade raw materials like homogenized mullite grains and high purity aluminas. Optimized particle packing results in excellent flow qualities and a dense, strong structure. A unique blend of binder modifiers provides friendly working times and reliable setting times. WAM®LC and ULC mixes are available from 50 to 80% alumina contents. |

Enhanced Monolithic Technology castables offer users the opportunity to install castable materials the old fashioned way; fast mixing times, ball-in-hand placement consistencies and conventional dry-out schedules. The difference between old fashioned castables and Enhanced Monolithic Technology castables is in the water addition and the resulting physical properties. Typically more than 15% water is added to conventional castables to acheive good flow, EMT mixes use only 8% water and are ready for placement after only 1 minute of mixing time. EMT mixes are available from 50 to 95% alumina. |
|
Construction Grade products provide you with the quality and performance you expect. 50 to 80% alumina castable mixes are available in low cement compositions. Gun mixes are available in 50 and 60% alumina compositions. |
|
| Dry gunning mixes are an excellent selection for patching existing linings, faster application of new linings or placement of linings without the cost and expense of forms. Westmoreland Advanced Materials™ manufactures gunning mixes in Construction Grade compositions using conventional cement contents and raw materials, and we manufacture Premium Grade gunning mixes using reduced cement contents and higher quality raw materials. |

Dry mortars offer some convenient features, among them, indefinite shelf life, individualized application consistency & economical pricing. WAM® heat setting mortars have been developed as multi purpose high temperature bonding mortars that will allow for expansion relief in high alumina linings before setting. WAM® air setting mortars are suited for use in laying brick linings from IFBs to high alumina qualities. Pre-Cast Shape manufacturers will appreciate our High Temperature Coating Mixes for use as dressing for hairline and surface cracks, and as patching material for broken corners and edges. |
